MMBA Spartans was established at San Jose State University (SJSU) with a simple but powerful dream: to bring people together through the beats of dhol and tasha, celebrate our Marathi spirit, and bring festive energy to the San Francisco Bay.
What began as a passionate student group expanded significantly in 2015 by uniting with the Maharashtra Mandal Bay Area (MMBA), creating a stronger framework to deepen local Marathi cultural roots
Spanning 14 years of rhythm and energy, the pathak has transitioned from silent post-pandemic planning years into an unstoppable season of digital breakthroughs, cross-state showcases, and high-impact community experiences
We cultivate and showcase the visceral energy of traditional Maharashtrian ensembles—including the thunder of the dhol, the sharp rhythm of the tasha, and the synchronized ring of zanj
Alongside the percussion squads, our dhwaj (flag-bearer) unit executes intricate, visually stunning choreographies that command crowds and add dramatic spectacle to community celebrations
More than just a performance troupe, Spartans acts as a vital, welcoming space for students and newcomers arriving in the San Francisco Bay Area. We help new residents forge lifelong bonds, build local networks, and find a vibrant cultural home
Every season, we run intensive multi-week training programs (such as our 22-session, 10-week summer program) starting with a sacred Vadyapujan ceremony. We take individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of prior dhol experience and transform them into disciplined, prideful cultural performers
A massive family of synchronized performers, support volunteers, and community leaders moving collectively as one
Behind our massive public appearances sits a dedicated operational ecosystem handling technical logistics, custom costume design, instrument maintenance, media capture, and systematic performance training
Standing as a living bearer of Maharashtra's historic, generations-old heritage
Meticulous preparation, collective coordination, and moving seamlessly as a unified, synchronized front
Striving for absolute acoustic accuracy, innovation, and high impact with every single strike
Turning rehearsals into collective celebrations and performances into lifelong memories for our crowd
Showcasing our art on major platforms like the BMM convention in Dallas
Delivering precise, choreographed march performances at venues like the AIA Independence Day Parade in San Jose Downtown
Creating legendary local spectacles, celebrated for its complex visual flag choreography and synchronized rhythm patterns
Leading the festive cheers at regional cultural nerve-centers including Shirdi Sai Darbar (Sunnyvale), AIA Ganapati Festival (San Ramon), Radio Zindagi Ganesh Utsav, GYEF Milpitas, and Golden Gate Mitra Mandal
Bring the thunderous energy of Dhol-Tasha and Dhwaj to your next cultural festival/ parade.
